MTA Announces Pilot Program for Five Free Bus Lines in New York City

The MTA announced Monday the routes that will be part of the pilot program for five free bus lines in the city.

“Later this year, we will launch a fare-free pilot program on five bus routes in all five boroughs.

“Thanks to funding from @GovKathyHochul, we will begin offering fare-free rides on Bx18A/B, B60, M116, Q4 (Local & Limited) and S46/S96 at the end of September,” the MTA wrote in a social media post.

For her part, the governor said: “The MTA is the lifeblood of New York City, and I am proud of the tremendous progress we have made in returning ridership to pre-pandemic levels.”

“By establishing these pilot fare-free bus routes, we are expanding access to public transportation throughout the city and improving transit equity to better serve all New Yorkers,” Hochul added.

Queens State Assemblyman Zohran Kwane Mandami, who has been one of the main legislators behind the budget agreement that will allow the free bus pilot program to exist, also posted on social media about the announcement of the five lines.

“This fall, 5 bus lines will be free in NYC: 1 in each borough!

“More than 4,000 New Yorkers demanded free buses, better service, and clearer bus lanes in the #FixtheMTA campaign.

“Together, we won this pilot without a fee, more frequent subway + traffic control in the bus lane,” wrote the assemblyman.

Buses on routes included in the pilot program will be clearly marked “Free” with green and black signs at the destination, digital signage on board the buses, stickers inside the bus, fare machines and on OMNY readers. .

The pilot program will not include free transfers to other buses or subway lines.

The five routes selected in the pilot program will offer service to 43,900 daily passengers from Monday to Friday, starting in September for a period of six to twelve months.
