MSME Traders at Jakarta Fair Report Theft of Goods by Visitors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Several MSME actors at the regional pavilion Jakarta Fair Kemayoran 2023 said that many of their wares were stolen by visitors during the exhibition. Very busy visitors made them unable to keep an eye on the products on display.

Oktavianti, a culinary and clothing seller at the pavilion in Banten Province, said that 9 sets of mukenas disappeared from her booth during the 11 days of the exhibition. According to him, cases of theft of goods were also experienced by friends at other booths.

“At the other booth, friends also told stories about the loss. While I was exhibiting here, 9 mukenas had disappeared from their hangers because they were full of visitors. So, it’s hard to monitor,” said Oktavianti at the Jakarta Fair Kemayoran area, Sunday, July 16, 2023, as quoted from Between.

The price for the lost mukena taken by rogue visitors varies, from IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000. However, mukena made from premium silk costs IDR 695 thousand.

Not only losing the mukena, Oktavianti said various snacks and food at the front of the booth also often disappeared.

He suspected that thefts often occurred during exhibitions because of the limited number of security officers who toured the provincial pavilion area. The limited area of CCTV surveillance cameras is also suspected as one of the causes.

The location of the CCTV in hall C of JIExpo Kemayoran appears to be only in the corner of the building. Meanwhile, many pavilion outlets are located in the middle of the room and are not monitored by CCTV.

An MSME trader at the DI Yogyakarta pavilion named Reni Irawati was also a victim of the ignorant hands of visitors to the Jakarta Raya Fair (PRJ). He mentioned that his 5 batik hats were missing.

“I also lost, although not much,” he said. “Other participants say some have lost up to millions.”

Even if you’re a victim theft, the traders stated that they would still take part in the exhibition again next year. This exhibition is considered to be able to increase marketing and bring them together with buyers in large quantities.

Marketing Director of JIExpo Kemayoran Ralph Scheunemann responded to the case of theft by MSME actors. He didn’t deny there was a chance for that to happen.

To prevent this case, the organizers of the Jakarta Fair have actually prepared CCTV in every sector. However, he said, the security of each booth was the responsibility of the exhibitors. “It will definitely be seen on CCTV, but it’s their duty and responsibility to guard each booth, just like you going to Tanah Abang,” he said.
