MSI will provide certain motherboards with support for up to 256GB of DDR5 memory. With a BIOS update it is possible to use four 64GB modules. The update is now available for the first motherboards.
MSI sets the bios update initially available for a dozen motherboards with Intel 600 and 700 chipsets and all MSI motherboards with AMD’s AM5 socket. This mainly concerns motherboards with a Z790 chipset, in addition to some B760 models. Support for other DDR5 motherboards with Intel 600 and 700 series chipsets will follow later.
The BIOS update allows users to install up to 256GB of DDR5 memory, spread across four slots. With two slots it is possible to put a maximum of 128GB of memory in the motherboard. The spec pages of Intel and AMD currently state that their CPUs officially support up to 192GB and 128GB of memory respectively.
There are currently no 64GB DDR5 modules available for consumers, but they are available for servers. MSI said last year that it would come with 256GB support. The manufacturer said at the time that it was working with Kingston to make 64GB DDR5 memory modules in that company’s Fury Renegade series.
