MSI Spatium M570 PRO Frozr: Is this the Fastest PCIe 5.0 SSD on the Market?

We have already tested several SSDs with PCIe 5.0 support. But they did not make any general impression on us. MSI is introducing the second generation of its Spatium M570 flagship SSD, this time in the PRO version with an extremely high heatsink. Will it finally be an interesting drive with a fast PCIe 5.0 interface?

Together with our partner Samsung SSD, we bring you a large reader and editorial poll. You can win a number of prizes for your vote for the best game…

When the first SSDs for PCIe 5.0 in the M.2 slot came out, there was nothing to choose from. Everything is built on the same Phison controller, but there were still differences. You may have noticed that some of these drives are “on paper” slower than others. At first it wasn’t important, but over time it became clear why. At first glance, it might seem that it has something to do with the temperature, or with the cooler on the disk. Dikes without a cooler were slower, with a cooler faster. That would make sense with PCIe 5.0, which heats up extremely.

But the differences lay elsewhere, i.e. in something else. Although all drives carry Micron’s NAND chips, some are fitted with an older version of memory chips with lower interface transfer rates. Such disks then have a maximum transmission of sequential reading and writing (theoretical and practical) of only around 10 GB/s. Now that Micron has moved from pilot production to mass production, these new chips are available to everyone. Therefore, manufacturers are currently updating their first versions of SSD drives to newer ones. Mostly with the PRO label (Corsair and MSI did the same).

This means that the PRO SSD versions already reach a maximum speed of 12.5 GB/s in both reading and writing. In my opinion, this is a cosmetic improvement, as the core properties of SSD drives are not improved, but it looks better in terms of marketing. We are testing just such a disk today.

I don’t know if we can call it the second generation, I would rather call it generation 1.5. The second generation will come with a different controller. This reminds me that none other than the Phison E26 for PCIe 5.0 has appeared on the market so far. Damage.

The essential moment of this disk is the cooler. I have already mentioned the high temperatures of PCIe 5.0 drives, cooling is an absolutely key condition for the operation of these drives. So MSI took inspiration from their graphics cards with the Frozr cooler and fitted this disk with its smaller version. That is, if you can say smaller. The heatsink is a really massive piece of metal.

The manufacturer MSI is currently releasing the Spatium M570 PRO Frozr model in three capacities. From 1 TB to 4 TB. It is a classic set of capacities that everyone offers. Smaller disks do not make sense, and larger ones run into technical problems, especially with cooling. Let’s dwell on the Czech price (around 8,600 CZK with VAT). It is more or less identical to the competition in the area of PCIe 5.0. But in this case you get a cooler “for free”. That is, in the price of the disk, the competition usually wants an extra five hundred crowns for versions with a cooler. Both capacities can therefore be purchased several hundred crowns cheaper than, for example, the mentioned Crucial T700.
