Intel’s latest Core 13000 “Raptor Lake”, like its predecessor “Alder Lake”, supports both DDR4 and DDR5. The older standard provides lower prices but also somewhat lower performance. Recently, the prices of DDR5 have started to approach DDR4, and with that, the new standard is better suited for more and more computer builds. As a result, MSI now states that they will begin phasing out motherboards with support for DDR4.
According to Board Channels MSI has stopped manufacturing a number of motherboards with socket LGA 1700 and support for DDR4 memory. Of the models mentioned, three are seen with the Z790 control circuit and one with the simpler B760. When the current stocks are exhausted, the motherboards will not return. It is currently unknown if more models will follow the same fate.
Motherboards that MSI says are phasing out are:
Due to the falling price of DDR5 memory, DDR4 has become an increasingly niche solution for lower price ranges. It is therefore not entirely surprising that MSI chooses to phase out this type of memory for motherboards with the Z790 chipset. As for the simpler B760 chipset, only one of MSI’s twelve models will disappear, and the range in that class will thus remain wide.
The information has yet to be confirmed by MSI, but if true, it appears that the end of DDR4 is fast approaching. Those who plan to buy new, or already have DDR4 memories to be used, may therefore have fewer options in the future.
