The NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) highlighted this Monday that the resolution approved in the UN Security Council to request a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is “a constructive step” that comes “after months of delay” and He has called for “concrete measures” and a “lasting” truce.

“After months of delay and at immense cost to the more than two million civilians living in Gaza, the UN Security Council has finally adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan. “This is a constructive step that must be followed by actions,” said the executive director of MSF in the United States, Avril Benoit.

The text, promoted by Algeria and which has had the only abstention from Washington, demands an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. It also calls for guaranteeing humanitarian access to meet the medical needs of the Gazan population.

“This is a constructive step that must be followed by action, but a two-week ceasefire is nowhere near enough time to respond to overwhelming humanitarian needs. “We reiterate our urgent request for a lasting ceasefire now,” said Benoit.

However, he stressed that, “in the meantime, Council members must ensure that the ceasefire is put into effect immediately and does not remain mere words on paper,” according to a statement from the NGO.

«We have already seen how two Security Council resolutions focused on the humanitarian emergency in Gaza have been largely ignored by the Government of Israel. “The members of the Council, individually and collectively, must ensure that the parties comply with the provisions of the resolution,” he noted.

Likewise, he added that the protection of the civilian population and infrastructure, as well as access to humanitarian aid, “cannot be conditioned on any other issue,” so the members of this UN body “must take advantage of this opportunity.” to end the collective punishment” of the Palestinians.

“While voting in favor of this crucial resolution, the Israeli Army has continued its attacks on civilians, its assault on hospitals and its obstruction of humanitarian access,” lamented the executive director of MSF.
