The head of the election observation mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), responsible for monitoring the legislative and regional elections for April 29, 2024, in Togo, spoke at an information session, on Saturday April 27, 2024, in Lomé, with the forty (40) observers on that mission.
Former Gambian Vice President, Ms. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, urged them to behave in a professional and neutral manner on the ground. “We are here to follow the vote and not give instructions or order things,” she said.
she pleaded for the peaceful conduct of the legislative and provincial elections on April 29, 2024; which, according to her, should contribute to the development and prosperity of Togo.
Ms. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang took advantage of this information session to praise the large number of women among the ECOWAS observers deployed in Togo, and the vital role of the West African organization in to include women in leadership as well as all professional fields in West Africa. This can be seen when she was appointed as the first woman to lead an election monitoring mission for ECOWAS. To do this, she thanked ECOWAS for the choice made on her little person.
This information session allowed the ECOWAS observers to learn more about the objectives of the mission, the socio-political and security situation as well as the electoral activities in Togo, not forgetting the observation procedure and the plan for use them in the field. Please note that ECOWAS observers are deployed in the Greater Lomé Autonomous Region and in the five (5) regions of the country which are Mara, Plateau, Central, Kara and Savane.
At the end of the information session, Ms. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang paid a courtesy call to the president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) in Togo, Dago Yabré. The civic education of voters, the communication strategy implemented by the CENI for the smooth running and success of the election were at the heart of the discussions between the two personalities.
In the afternoon, she attended an information session on the preparation and progress of the legislative and regional elections on April 29, 2024, organized jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Territorial Administration, Security as well as the CENI.
