“According to the data provided to the Ministry of Health by the National Center for Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases, in the 2017 season (09.05.2017 – 30.08.2017) 16 cases of meningitis / meningo-encephalitis with West Nile virus were confirmed, of which six deaths (Bucharest – 3, Buzau – 1, Braila – 1, Olt – 1) “, according to a communiqué sent by MS.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that all these cases, detected and registered in Romania, are sporadic and at the moment “do not involve the risk of a large epidemic”.
The MoH also recommends to the local authorities to take disinsection measures in the localities, as soon as possible, in order to prevent the spread.

80% of infected people have no symptoms, but if symptoms such as fever or severe headache occur, Ministry of Health specialists recommend that people go to the nearest doctor’s office immediately.
“In severe cases, neurological symptoms also appear: stiff neck, vomiting, rash on the chest, increased sensitivity to light, convulsions, chills, chronic fatigue, muscle weakness,” according to the quoted source.
The Ministry of Health recommends the following protection measures:
- avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants;
- avoiding areas with a lot of vegetation and high humidity (parks, forests, stagnant waters, etc.);
- use of mosquito repellent chemicals;
- to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house (safety nets, etc.);
- to ensure the drying of the puddles around the households;
- remove standing water containers and household waste.
