MAN PrimeServ retrofits German cruise ship with an environmentally friendly SCR system (press release from MAN) – The highly compact SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system adapts to limited space and meets the strict Norwegian emission standards. This retrofit shows the cruise industry’s general desire to move towards sustainability
MAN PrimeServ, the after-sales brand of MAN Energy Solutions, has developed an SCR solution that is retrofitted on the MS “Amadea”, a cruise ship chartered by PHOENIX Reisen GmbH and operated by BSM Cruise Services. The Amadea is known as the main location for the very popular television series “Traumschiff”.
The retrofit designed by MAN PrimeServ in Augsburg provides for the integration of two SCR systems into the two MAN 7L58 / 64 four-stroke drive engines from Amadea. The renovation will begin in September 2021.
The retrofitting is an expression of PHOENIX’s efforts to improve the Amadea’s environmental friendliness. It will enable the ship to meet the emission standards that apply in the Norwegian fjords, which are important to the cruise industry and are protected by UNESCO. For MAN PrimeServ, the focus of this project was on minimizing pollutant emissions while maintaining the same engine power and drive efficiency.
Alexander Schäfer, Head of MAN PrimeServ Turbocharger & Exhaust Gas Treatment, explained: “The concept of offering sustainable cruises is an important trend in the industry. The Amadea is therefore only operated with high-quality marine diesel. With the help of our SCR solution, PHOENIX and BSM will play a pioneering role in reducing emissions in this segment. We are excited about our contribution to this forward-looking project that will benefit the environment. “
Schäfer added: “We are increasingly receiving inquiries from cruise and ferry companies who want to improve their environmental friendliness even before the introduction of the relevant legal regulations. We can support these companies with our solutions, regardless of whether they intend to enter the protected Norwegian fjords or not. “
