Mr. Xi directed the rescue work after the fishing boat capsized, leaving 39 people missing

(PLO) – Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered agencies to make every effort to conduct rescue work after a Chinese fishing boat capsized off the Indian Ocean, leaving 39 people missing.

On May 17, the fishing boat Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028 capsized off the Indian Ocean, leaving 39 people missing. According to the news agency AFPon board were 17 Chinese, 17 Indonesian and 5 Filipino.

“Chinese and foreign ships have arrived at the incident area. Search and rescue work is underway. Many rescue workers are also at the scene,” – Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference on May 17.

Philippine Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Teresita Daza said Manila “is aware of and is closely monitoring the situation”.

Indonesia’s foreign ministry also confirmed the incident and said Beijing was coordinating rescue efforts.

Also on May 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked the country’s agencies to make every effort to rescue the missing. He also suggested that relevant departments activate the emergency response mechanism immediately, according to the newspaper China Daily.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang also called on relevant agencies to make every effort to limit the number of casualties in the incident. He asked agencies to strengthen safety management of fishing vessels at sea.

The ship that capsized is owned by Penglai Jinglu Fishery Company, one of China’s major fishing companies. According to the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC), the ship is allowed to fish for red squid and Pacific swordfish.

According to the tracking website MarineTraffic, the Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028 left Cape Town (South Africa) on May 5 and headed for Busan (South Korea). The last time the ship was located was on May 10, southeast of Reunion – a French island in the Indian Ocean.
