Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Secretary General (Secretary General) of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has just given the latest warning regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Tedros, the world is currently entering the beginning of a wave of new coronavirus infections and other deaths.
He stated this in front of members of the International Olympic Committee in Tokyo, Tuesday (20/7/2021). This, he said, was due to the global failure to share vaccines, tests and treatments.
“During the 19 months into the pandemic, and seven months since the first vaccine was approved, we are now in the early stages of another wave of infections and deaths,” he said.
He stressed that the wave of the pandemic would still occur given the uneven distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine. He mentioned that many poor countries have not received sufficient vaccines and are currently still struggling with the handling of the pandemic that is not optimal.
“The difference in vaccines around the world masks a terrible injustice,” the Ethiopian added.
Furthermore, he asked countries that have access to excess vaccines to donate their vaccines to countries that do not yet have vaccines. This will greatly assist the handling of the global pandemic.
WHO also stressed that the delta variant currently accounts for more than three-quarters of specimens in many large countries. “This variant is competing rapidly with other variants, and is predicted to dominate in the next few months,” the WHO said in a statement.
