How does Mr. Olympia work?
Mr. Olympia was won in 1965 by Bodybuildingicon Joe Weider (†93). The goal at the time: to offer an incentive for professionals to stay loyal to the sport. The competition has shaped the careers of many legendary bodybuilders, including Arnold Schwarzenegger (77). The Austrian has been crowned champion at Mr. Olympia seven times.
A typical Mr. Olympia weekend is packed with a variety of competitions. Each class begins with pre-judging on both competition days. Here all athletes are compared with each other and roughly put in an order. The finals follow later, usually with the top 10 in each class. The bodybuilders perform a routine and are compared. The most important evaluation criteria include symmetry, posing, presentation and muscular development.
Mr. Olympia 2024: Schedule
The 2024 Mr. Olympia will take place in Las Vegas at the Resorts World Theater. Last year the athletes were on stage in Orlando. The competitions last several days. In the Men’s Open class, the American Derek Lunsford (31) is the reigning champion. For many, the Iranian Hadi Choopan (37) was last year’s winner and was therefore particularly hungry for the title this year.
In addition to the Men’s Open, the Classic Physique (existing since 2013) is the most anticipated event on the Olympic weekend. The class is particularly interesting for German fans.
