The person with whom the MPs spoke was a so-called deepfake imitation. This is a technique with which very realistic fake videos can be made by editing someone else’s face in moving images.
The committee says it has received confirmation that it has not spoken with Volkov herself, but with an imposter. She is “indignant about this state of affairs” and has offered to talk to Volkov after all.
Other parliaments have also had to deal with these practices. “The House of Representatives is examining how such incidents can be prevented in the future.”
The members of the permanent parliamentary committee are Geert Wilders (PVV), Kati Piri (PvdA), Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (D66), Ruben Brekelmans (VVD), Tunahan Kuzu (Denk), Agnes Mulder (CDA), Tom, van der Lee (GroenLinks) ), Gert-Jan Segers (Christian Union) and Raymond de Roon (PVV). They were “almost all present,” said one of the members Friday.
