Many reproaches were expressed during the debate in the committee. Much of the opposition disagrees with Bergkamp’s attitude.
For example, SGP party chairman Kees van der Staaij did not see the added value of continuing the investigation now that Arib had already resigned. SP member Renske Leijten asked Bergkamp to stop the investigation.
The Speaker of the House himself does not really want to stop the investigation and indicated that he found it “very bad” that MPs wanted to vote on this. That would have given the case even greater political significance, he feared him.
‘launched for lions’
The PvdA, Arib’s own party, believed that the former president of the House of Representatives ‘had been fooled’ and therefore did not consider it appropriate to continue the investigation.
The parliamentarians also feel supported by the documents sent by three professors who seriously criticize the research.
It is not yet known what will happen to the investigation. Bergkamp will discuss the result of the vote with the rest of the board.
Reign of terror
