Mpox: WHO approves diagnostic test to accelerate fight against virus – LINFO.re

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a new diagnostic test for the mpox virus, formerly called monkeypox.

A test to facilitate screening and control of the virus

The WHO has officially included this diagnostic test on its emergency use list, allowing other UN agencies to distribute it and ensuring faster dissemination in affected countries. This diagnostic in vitro (DIV), called Alinity mMPXV and developed by Abbott Molecular, is based on the PCR technique, capable of detecting the DNA of virus mpox from samples taken from skin lesions. “Early diagnosis of mpox allows for rapid treatment and care, as well as control of the virus“, specified the organization in its press release dated October 4. Since the start of the year, mpox has caused nearly 900 deaths in Africa.

Limited screening capacities in Africa

The mpoxwhich is spread both from animals to humans and between humans, causes symptoms such as fever, muscle pain and rash. According to the WHO, more than 30,000 suspected cases have been recorded in 2024, mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Nigeria. However, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, only 37% of suspected cases were tested.

The WHO-approved PCR test aims to fill this gap by facilitating the confirmation of suspected cases, particularly in regions where medical infrastructure is insufficient. “Improving access to quality medical products is at the heart of our efforts to help countries contain the spread of the virus and protect their populations, particularly in underserved regions.” said Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Health Products.
