Many Dutch people have questions about the MPOX virus, which has now appeared in Europe. A frequently asked question: should we start washing our hands again after visiting the toilet? Psychologist Eric Stammelhuis knows the answer.

The contagious MPox virus, also known as monkeypox, is getting closer. Now it is too in Sweden the first reported disease. It is reminiscent of the corona pandemic a few years ago. Back then, the Dutch had to adhere to strict measures to prevent pollution, such as washing their hands after visiting the toilet.

“Good hygiene is really important to prevent the mpox virus,” says entomologist Eric Stammelhuis. “But you can also overdo it. It is wise to wash your hands from time to time, but this is not necessary after every visit to the toilet. Certainly not if you’ve only urinated, or only exerted very little pressure.”

If you want to be extra careful, the doctor has recommendations: “Clean the toilet seat at least once a month with a damp cloth. And for gentlemen: try with your thumb and forefinger, until the rest of your hand is clean.”
