In May, the GGD will start vaccinating against mpox again. Anyone with an increased risk of mpox can make an appointment to get this vaccination. The vaccination against mpox is intended to prevent infections and the spread of the mpox virus as much as possible.
Who is the mpox vaccination for?
The vaccination against mpox is given to gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men and trans people, who have an increased risk of mpox.
Are you a man who has sex with men or are you a trans person? Then you can make an appointment with the GGD for vaccination if one of the following applies to you:
- You use PrEP to prevent HIV, or you are on the waiting list for this
EN/OF - You had sex with more than 10 people in the past year
EN/OF - You have sex at sex locations or sex parties
EN/OF - You do group sex
EN/OF - You have HIV and you will be tested for hepatitis C at your checkups.
Does the above apply to you? Then make an appointment for your vaccination against mpox.

Already vaccinated?
- Have you been fully vaccinated against mpox yet? Then a new vaccination is not necessary.
- Have you already had one of the injections, but not yet the second? Then you can make an appointment for this. One shot is sufficient in people who have received the smallpox vaccination in the past, which was given to infants until 1974.
- Were you invited to get vaccinated last year but didn’t go? Even then you can now make an appointment for vaccination if you fall within the current criteria.

How does the vaccine work?
No vaccine offers 100% protection. Not even this vaccine. And it takes 6 weeks for the vaccine to fully work. That is why, even if you are vaccinated, it remains important to get tested if you have complaints.
Why vaccinate now?
At the moment there are hardly any new cases of mpox in the Netherlands. In the rest of Europe there are also very few mpox. There are, however, occasional revivals of the virus worldwide, such as recently in Paris. So the virus can come back. The number of available vaccines is still limited and the new vaccination campaign will therefore end at the end of 2023. That is why now is the time to get vaccinated if you want to.
