The monkeypox virus is on the rise (mpox) with the WHO declaring a state of emergency.

OR Sweden confirmed today the first positive case of mpox in Europe.

“During the afternoon it was confirmed that we have a case in Sweden of the most serious type of mpox”the Minister of Health and Social Affairs Jakob Forsmed said at a press conference.

It is recalled that a new strain of the virus was first identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in September 2023 and was named Clade Ib.

This strain is more deadly and is transmitted more easily than the previous ones.

How is the virus transmitted?

Mpox is a viral disease that transmitted from animals to humans.

It can also be transmitted from man to man with close physical contact.

This year, it is observed increase in cases by 160%, compared to the previous year, according to data released by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) last week.

The symptoms of smallpox

As the European Vaccination Information Portal points out, symptoms include lesions that can be difficult to differentiate from infections caused by other poxviruses and, to some extent, fowlpox.

People infected with monkeypox often develop one combination of the following symptoms:

  • fever
  • headache
  • shudder
  • exhaustion
  • swelling of the lymph nodes
  • back pain and muscle aches
  • mucosal lesions and skin rash.

The rash may appear before or after the other symptoms. It is usually found on the face, hands, feet, around the genitals or anus.

The skin lesions they often first appear as spots that develop into blisters with fluid. Then, in splinted scabs, before the skin is completely healed.

It is noted that most people infected with monkeypox recover without complications.

Newly diagnosed cases of monkeypox should be medically evaluated for disease severity and risk factors.
