Mpox Monkey Pox going crazy, starting to take life in this country

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – One country in West Africa, Ivory Coast, reported 28 cases of mpox or monkey pox, where one person was recorded to have died as a result of contracting the virus. Before that, this virus had killed hundreds of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the Ivory Coast health authorities on Tuesday (20/8/2024) the number had increased from the six cases announced on August 1.

“The National Institute of Public Hygiene (INHP) recorded 28 confirmed cases including one death across the country on Tuesday,” INHP doctor Daouda Coulibaly said. AFP.

The fatal case and several others were recorded in the country’s economic capital, Abidjan. Coulibaly said tests were underway to identify the latest strain of mpox cases.

“There is no concern about this situation,” said Coulibaly. “We are just seeing the beginning of an emerging disease, there is no increase” in cases.

He said that investigation for mpox has been intensified.

“We need to break the chain of transmission, identify the links of cases, isolate them and track them.”

The cases identified in the West African country this year are of a subtype that spread during a previous epidemic in 2022, known as clade 2.

A more infectious and deadly subtype known as clade 1b has emerged in the Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Sweden.

More than 500 people have died in the Congo this year from some form of mpox. Last week, WHO declared it a global public health emergency.
