According to the health services of Great Britain, 3 cases of the Mpox Clade 1b virus variant have been diagnosed in London.
Last week the first isolated case of Mpox Clade 1b was confirmed in London, and two more cases have just been announced – in household contacts of the first case. The risk to the population of this country remains low.
The Doctors of the Therapeutic Clinic (Alexandra Hospital) of the EKPA School of Medicine Theodora Psaltopoulou (Pathologist, Professor of Therapeutic-Epidemiology-Preventive Medicine) and Panagiota Zacharakis (Biologist) summarize the data.
The first case identified in London last week was a person on holiday in Africa who developed flu-like symptoms 24 hours after returning to Great Britain (UK) and later developed a progressively worsening rash. The contacts of all three cases are monitored and they are offered the necessary diagnostic and therapeutic treatments (vaccination).
Extensive planning is underway to ensure healthcare professionals are equipped and ready to respond to any further confirmed cases. Mpox is highly contagious in households with close contact, so it is not unexpected that further outbreaks occur in the same household.
