MPLA points out weaknesses in UNITA’s process of dismissal from PR – Jornal OPaís

MPLA deputy João “Jú” Martins stated, this Saturday, that the initiative to dismiss the President of the Republic (PR), João Lourenço, lacked fundamental material to be taken forward by Parliament.

The Proposal for the Indictment and Dismissal of the President of the Republic, formulated by UNITA, was rejected with 123 votes against (MPLA and PHA) and one abstention from the PRS, during the Extraordinary Plenary Meeting of the 2nd Legislative Session of the V Legislature.

UNITA abstained from voting, due to alleged “procedural irregularities”.

According to deputy Jú Martins, the country was put almost in suspense on this matter for more than three months, having highlighted that the UNITA Parliamentary Group used all possible tricks to intensify the process, together with civil society.

He noted that that opposition party was managing this element to present it on the eve of the opening of the new Parliamentary Year (2023/2024), Monday, but it was clear that, from a political point of view, it did not have the 111 deputies to give follow-up to the process.

He regretted the fact that UNITA had created the story that there would eventually be MPLA deputies who could align with this type of maneuver it had devised.

For them, UNITA deputies could even promote the initiative as the Bar Association did, file an action in the Constitutional Court, to check whether there are irregularities or violations of the Law, and not trigger one of the most serious mechanisms in the political exercise of the constitutional system. Angolan, promote the dismissal of the President of the Republic.

“Of course, the MPLA would not have agreed to this maneuver, with total disrespect for the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, parliamentary ethics and even the Parliamentary table,” he said.

He explained that one thing is the accusation and another is the beginning of the process, remembering that the process was approached and exhausted in accordance with the rules.

On the other hand, deputy António Paulo, also from the MPLA, noted that, although each group of 1/3 of the deputies can always trigger this initiative, it must be taken up by the Plenary of the National Assembly.
