MP Kauthar Bouchallikht (GroenLinks) is withdrawing from the list of candidates for the upcoming elections, she announced on social media on Saturday evening. In the discussions surrounding the Gaza conflict, she lacks the recognition that the Israeli government is at the root of it.
She outlines that she has consistently missed the context surrounding the situation in Israel in statements over the past week, “including within my own party.” “This ‘war’ did not suddenly start, it has been going on for 75 years,” said Bouchallikht. She says context does not mean denying Hamas’s heinous actions, but “recognizing where they come from, namely the Israeli government, even against the wishes of many Israelis and Jewish people.”
Bouchallikht writes that she has had internal discussions within the faction over the past week and that she has shared that she misses this important part of the story. “Discussions to express this themselves were also not constructive and party democracy was hard to find at times.”
She will still vote for GroenLinks-PvdA “because I still believe that it is better for the Netherlands”. GroenLinks faction leader Jesse Klaver writes on X that Bouchallikht’s decision surprises and makes him sad. “I have found it a privilege to work with you in recent years. This is your decision and I respect it. You are an example to many and you will remain so,” said Klaver.
Bouchallikht entered the House of Representatives in 2021 and was in position 17 on the GroenLinks-PvdA list for the upcoming elections.
