A member of the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Piotr Bistron, could secretly visit Belarus at the end of 2022, crossing the border from Lithuania, and hid this fact in his report on a trip abroad.
As reported by “European truth” with reference to RNDthis is stated in the investigation of the Correctiv center and the Lithuanian TV channel LRT.
According to a source in the Lithuanian border authorities, the AfD deputy allegedly entered Belarus by land transport from Lithuania through the border town of Medininkai on November 16 and returned on November 19.
On the way back, the border crossing of Bystron was checked by the Lithuanian border guard, and the name of the driver who accompanied him was also recorded. Officially, the service refused to confirm this information.
The purpose of the AfD deputy’s visit to Belarus remained unclear. He himself did not respond to the investigators’ written request within the prescribed period, and in a personal conversation he did not confirm or deny the trip.
Bistron is the representative of the “Alternative for Germany” in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag. The head of the committee, MP from the Social Democratic Party Michael Roth confirmed that the AfD representative applied for a business trip to Lithuania in November 2022.
“Mr Bystron submitted an application to the President of the Bundestag on 9 November 2022 for approval of a single official trip to Vilnius/Lithuania from 14 to 16 November 2022. There is no mention of a further trip to Belarus,” he said.
According to Roth, Belarus supports the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and therefore should also be subject to EU sanctions. He wants to raise the issue of Bistron’s visit at a committee meeting, since trips to Belarus are not “in the interests of the entire German Bundestag.”
