Mozambique Post-Election Violence Claims Hundreds of Lives

The aftermath of Mozambique’s October 9th general elections has been marred by widespread violence, leaving a trail of devastation and ‌raising serious human rights concerns. ⁢ A recent report from the non-governmental organization (NGO) Decision Electoral Platform reveals a shocking death toll, with at least 278 fatalities and a ⁣dozen individuals still missing following protests sparked by the election ⁢results.

The body of ‌one victim, who‍ disappeared during the demonstrations, was discovered abandoned in Búzi District, ‍Sofala province, on Friday, according to Wilker Dias, executive director of Decision Electoral Platform. The violence, which began ⁢after ⁢the October 9th elections, has escalated dramatically in recent weeks.

Dias stated, “About 80% ‌of the missing people correspond to people who support the presidential candidate Venâncio‌ Mondlane.” He further explained, “The rest are people who participated, at some point, in the ⁣demonstrations for various reasons.”

The NGO’s report paints a grim picture of the situation. ⁣Between⁢ December 23rd and 29th alone,‌ Decision Electoral⁢ Platform documented 176 deaths, with Maputo and Nampula provinces reporting the⁤ highest numbers – 37 ‌and‍ 36 respectively. During this same ⁤period, the⁢ NGO also recorded 240 individuals wounded by gunfire and 167 arrests. Since ‍the start of the post-election protests on October 21st, Decision Electoral Platform has tallied a staggering 586 deaths and 4,201 arrests, with 167 of those arrests occurring since December 23rd.

The declaration on december 23rd by‌ Mozambique’s Constitutional Council declaring Daniel Chapo,⁣ a candidate supported by the ruling frelimo party, as the winner of the presidential ⁣election with 65.17% of the⁤ votes, further fueled⁤ the unrest. This announcement, along with ⁢Frelimo’s retention of its parliamentary majority, ‌ignited widespread protests from supporters of Venâncio Mondlane, who,‍ according to the Constitutional Council, received‍ only 24% of the vote.

The⁤ ensuing ⁤chaos saw pro-Mondlane activists taking to the streets, erecting barricades, engaging in‌ looting,⁢ and clashing with ‌police who responded with gunfire in an attempt to quell the violence. the situation remains volatile and deeply concerning.

the‌ scale of violence in Mozambique highlights the‍ urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the underlying political tensions and ⁤ensure ⁣accountability for the human rights ⁢abuses that have occurred. The international community must work to promote dialog and peaceful ‌resolution to prevent further bloodshed.
