Movistar Plus announced its next original series, “Celeste,” which appears to be inspired by the problems that singer Shakira had with the treasury, for which she pleaded guilty last month.
Although “Celeste” does not have Shakira as its direct protagonist, the series shares notable similarities with the fiscal situation of the renowned artist. The series portrays the life of Sara Santano, a veteran inspector of the Spanish Tax Agency who, on the verge of retirement, faces the most significant case of her career: proving that Celeste, a Latin music superstar, who resides in Spain does not comply with the nation’s tax regulations.
Sara must stop her retirement plans to get involved in the case of Celeste, who is not only a singer, but also a star who sells out concerts and has her own perfume and hair care line.
The similarities with Shakira
Last November, Shakira pleaded guilty to the six crimes that the Spanish government had accused her of since 2018 for tax fraud. The singer accepted an agreement where she would have to spend three years in prison, from which she is exempt because she has no criminal record, as well as pay a fine of more than 7 million euros to compensate for the damages caused.
The crimes charged against her involve tax evasion during 2012 and 2014, years between which the singer allegedly defrauded the Spanish treasury of 14 million euros. Shakira assured that during those years she only visited the country, but she was not a resident.
The amount that the prosecutors had stipulated was 23.5 million euros and a period of 8 years in prison, but thanks to his guilty plea both measures were considerably reduced, since with the payment of 432 thousand euros he avoided going to prison.
