Spain’s First Naked Movie Screenings Spark Debate
Spain made headlines this past weekend with the debut of its first-ever nude movie screenings. Two cinemas in Barcelona and Valencia hosted the unconventional events, each attracting approximately 50 nude attendees for a showing of the new Spanish film, “You Are Not Me,” a Christmas thriller.
The screenings weren’t spontaneous; they were organized by a group of nudist enthusiasts who even served as extras in the film. Attendees arrived fully clothed, disrobing once inside the theater. While complete nudity was an option, many chose to remain partially clothed, keeping on shoes and socks. Towels were provided for seating comfort.
A planned Madrid screening was ultimately canceled, but the Barcelona and Valencia events generated meaningful buzz. One participant, Ángela, shared her outlook: “Nudism is more than just putting away clothes, we also put aside shame and what weighs us down.” She described the film itself as ”cool and exciting.”
Segimon Rovira, a member of a Catalan naturism club, offered further insight into the motivations behind the event. He explained, “It is indeed quite natural for us naturists to be naked in nature, in the mountains, on the beach, but in winter it is not possible, so we organize visits to exhibitions or museums. We want nudity to be taken naturally and try to separate it from sexual connotations.”
The screenings have ignited a conversation about body positivity and the normalization of nudity in public spaces. While the events were met with some controversy, they also highlight a growing movement challenging societal norms surrounding the human body. The debate extends beyond Spain’s borders, raising questions about similar events in the United States and other countries.
The events in Spain offer a unique lens through which to examine evolving cultural attitudes towards nudity and public acceptance of choice lifestyles. The success of these screenings, despite the cancellation in Madrid, suggests a growing openness to such events, potentially paving the way for similar initiatives in other parts of the world.
