Fire salamanders are twilight and nocturnal. Only when it rains after long dry periods in summer do they leave their hiding places during the day to go in search of food. This is why the fire salamander is popularly known as the “rain man”. The film describes the life of the fire salamander, its habitat, nutrition and reproduction. A short sequence is dedicated to the alpine salamander, which gives birth to fully developed young and is therefore independent of water. Amphibians are normally tied to water and land, to two habitats, as their name suggests: “amphibians” (Greek for: double-lived).
