Paul was born into an Italian-American family in Brooklyn in 1939. His dream was to become an opera singer, but he made his mark in Hollywood as a classic representative of gangsters and policemen.

He has acted in film, television and Broadway. In the 1970s, he tried comedies (On the Level) and sci-fi, Den of the Dolphin. He became more famous thanks to the films Mafiáni or Firma by Sydney Pollack.

The historical drama Nixon directed by Oliver Stone was also successful.

Television series formed a relatively prominent part of his work. In the 1980s, it was Moonlight and That’s Murder, She Wrote, and he later had a long run on Law & Order. For a while, he also jumped into Star Trek, recently filmed the series Godfather of Harlem and Bad Blood.
