The authors of the research state in their report that mouthwash containing the antiseptic substance cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in an amount of at least 0.07 percent can effectively destroy the coronavirus contained in saliva.

In the laboratory, they simulated conditions similar to those in the oral cavity for 12 weeks and measured how different mouthwash brands reduced the amount of virus in the mouth.

“While this lab study is encouraging and a step forward, we obviously need more research … We need to understand whether the mouthwash effect we saw in the lab will work for patients,” The Independent quoted research team leader David Thomas as saying. According to him, the clinical trial should end at the beginning of next year.

“This study supports further evidence that several commonly available mouthwashes designed to prevent periodontitis can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses,” added research co-author Richard Stanton.
