Hollywood and fans of all ages are mourning the death of Matthew Perry, the beloved Chandler Bing from Friends, found drowned yesterday in his Pacific Palisades mansion in Los Angeles. No drugs in the house, for an actor who in the past had long fought against any type of addiction, but the police found many anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs: it will take months before the toxicological tests give results, the police said law enforcement agencies that exclude any suspicious origin. According to TMZ, the 54-year-old Perry had had a normal day before his death: he had played two hours of pickleball, a sport he was fanatical about, at a club near his home. He then asked his assistant to go get him a new iPhone and a pair of glasses. Having returned from errands, the assistant found the actor unconscious in the jacuzzi and called the emergency numbers.

Shock and condolence were the underlying theme of the messages posted on social media by friends and colleagues of the sarcastic ‘Joey’s best friend’, but also the most cynical and unhappy of the Central Park Cafe’ regulars in over 200 episodes of the ten seasons broadcast on NBC between 1994 to 2004. On behalf of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, the sitcom’s official profile on Instagram posted a collective message in tribute to Matthew, “a true gift for all of us” . Other Friends alums like Morgan Fairchild, Chandler’s mother on the sitcom, posted tributes. For Mira Sorvino, who starred with Perry in 1994’s Parallel Lives, the former costar was “a sweet and tormented soul. May he find peace and happiness in Heaven.” Among many, also a message from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with whom Matthew had played as a child when his mother worked as a spokesperson for Pierre, Justin’s father, then prime minister in Ottawa.

Matthew hadn’t been alone in Friends: in a career spanning nearly 40 years, he made his debut as a teenager in a 1979 episode of the crime show 240-Robert. The role of Chandler had occupied him from the ages of 24 to 34. “You’re funny, but I wouldn’t want to be there when you stop laughing. You have intimacy problems. You use your humor to keep people at a distance. An only child? Divorced parents before your puberty? By the book”, she tells him, in an episode of the first season, the psychologist Roger is the boyfriend of his friend Phoebe. Matthew himself had admitted it: it was as if someone had followed him for a year and stole all his jokes, “aping his vision of the world, tired of life and at the same time humorous”.
Perry had detailed his vicissitudes in the 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers and the Terrible Thing. Due to an accident in 1997 he was prescribed Vicodin and became addicted to it to the point of taking 55 a day. To free himself from alcohol and drugs he had been in and out of detox centers for decades. In 2018 he risked dying from a gastrointestinal perforation, for which he underwent surgery and spent months in hospital. In memory today, Sky Series is re-proposing the special Friends: the Reunion which two years ago saw the actor reunite with his historic colleagues on Stage 24 of the Warner Studios in Burbank, the iconic stage which turned six almost debutants into global stars.
