The world of biathlon is in mourning: a former ski hunter has died at the age of 43.

Biathlon has become increasingly popular in Switzerland in recent years. Simon Hallenbarter was one of the pioneers in this field. Now the 43-year-old former biathlete is dead.

Hallenbarter started out as a cross country skier, but moved on to biathletes when he was elite. He has a total of three Olympic appearances, as has been in Turin (2006), Vancouver (2010) and Sochi (2014). He has also competed in eight world championships. At a time when biathlon received little attention in Switzerland, he ran several times in the top 10 of the World Cup, with two sixth places in the sprints of Khanty (08/09) and Ruhpolding (07/08) as his best results of him.

In the 2006 season, Hallenbarter was the best Swiss biathlete. He ended his career in 2014 and has since run a sports shop in Obergesteln in the canton of Valais. On Thursday the heart of the former biathlete stopped beating.
