Mourning in Corona times: digitally on the Internet

The contact restrictions during the Corona period make it difficult to maintain community. This also applies to burials in cemeteries. The Würzburg funeral home “Welt-Bestattung” now offers a digital solution that allows all family members, relatives and friends to take part in the celebration of the final rest.

Geli Stegerwald, who has been running the funeral home in Bronnbachergasse for ten years, offered her customers a live stream on the Internet a few years ago, which should enable mourners to attend the funeral abroad. “We are amazed at how rapidly the demand has now risen due to Corona,” she says.

“We respect piety and keep a distance when recording on site.”

The entrepreneur, who is also the initiator and partner of the Ruhewald in Greußenheim, has the best prerequisites for this service: She is a trained mechanical engineer and communications electronics engineer. As an IT specialist, she once had her own specialist shop on Sanderstraße and is now active on the Internet every day.

“In Würzburg and the surrounding area, Welt-Bestattung is certainly one of the first companies to offer this technology live,” says the owner cautiously. In any case, she has not found a comparable offer among competitors in and around Würzburg, she says. It also offers the live stream at funerals as a service for other funeral homes. The recordings are made by a trained member of the funeral home and posted on site using special technology.

On request, relatives of the deceased can receive an internet link

Upon request, relatives of the deceased will receive a link for Internet channels such as YouTube or Facebook with a reference to the broadcast date. “When taking pictures on site, we respect piety and keep our distance, mourners are informed by signs and can hold back accordingly,” assures the undertaker.

She takes away the worry that the funeral can be seen by anyone on the Internet. “Only those people who receive a link from us or the family of the deceased can also watch the live stream.”

“A broadcast is no substitute for an on-site visit”

During the transmission, care is taken to ensure that only the funeral service itself is shown, but not the intimate reactions of the mourners. This service is also helpful for mourners who cannot be there for physical or psychological reasons. Recently, 300 friends of the deceased said goodbye online through such a live stream of “Welt-Funeral”. “We do not want to replace the traditional funeral service with broadcasting on the Internet. We are aware that broadcasting is no substitute for on-site visits,” says Geli Stegerwald.

“Welt-Bestattung” also offers a memorial site on the Internet where mourners from all over the world can write condolences. In the online condolence book, you can light a virtual candle with one click. A video of the funeral service with funeral speech and pieces of music can also be given to relatives as a DVD if they were unable to attend a funeral at sea, for example.
