Alemannia Aachen mourns Bart Meulenberg. The player from the 1999 promotion team died after a serious illness at the age of 48.
The Dutchman moved to Tivoli from Fortuna Sittard in 1998. Under coach Werner Fuchs he had a regular place in the Alemannia team at left-back and played 31 of 32 league games in his first season at Tivoli. At the end of this season there was promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the last home game against Wuppertaler SV he scored the goal to make it 2-0. In the 1999/00 season, Meulenberg made eight second division appearances for Alemannia, including taking the penalty to make it 1-0 in the 2-1 away win at Bökelberg. Afterwards, injuries repeatedly set him back, and until 2002 he played in the second team, which won the FVM Cup in 2001/02.
In 2002, Bart Meulenberg moved back to Sittard and then worked as a player and coach for various amateur clubs in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the fall of 2023, his teammates from the promotion team collected money at Tivoli for treatment options for his illness. Alemannia Aachen will honor Bart Meulenberg’s memory. Our deep condolences go out to his family and all relatives.
