Mourning for Anton Schaaf: prominent SPD man dies at the age of only 58 – Pforzheim

Pforzheim / Wolfsburg. Not only SPD members in the region react with sadness and dismay to the news of the sudden and unexpected death of the former SPD member of the Bundestag Anton Schaaf, which the SPD district association Karlsruhe Land announced on Wednesday. Schaaf was district chairman there from 2016 to 2018. In the state elections in 2016, he ran in the constituency of Bretten, but lived in Pforzheim because he was the husband of Pforzheim’s social mayor Monika Müller, with whom he has three children. He was 58 years old.

In 2018, his wife had become an alderman for social affairs in Wolfsburg, which is why he did not run again as district chairman, but moved with the family to Lower Saxony. “Toni”, as he was called, was a member of the SPD for 35 years. The trained bricklayer had made up his secondary school leaving certificate on his second educational path and finally worked as a driver for garbage disposal in Mülheim an der Ruhr. There he was last released as a works council and was a member of the city council from 1999 to 2002. In 2002 Schaaf was elected to the Bundestag for the first time, and in 2005 he was the pension policy spokesman for his parliamentary group. Since 2007 he has been a member of their extended board. He always brought his constituency Mülheim-Essen I directly until he left in 2013.
