He became world famous in the 1960s, playing the iconic title role as a killer in Jean-Pierre Melville’s “The Cruel Intention” and had previously appeared in Luchino Visconti’s “Rocco and His Brothers” and Rene Clement’s Patricia Highsmith adaptation “Only the Sun Was Witness”. He also appeared in “The Leopard” for Visconti. He played alongside Romy Schneider, with whom he had been a couple for several years, in the classic “The Swimming Pool”. He and Jean-Paul Belmondo were a box office magnet in French cinema for three decades. They acted together in “Borsalino”, a comedic gangster story produced by Delon. Delon also directed on occasion.
