Mourinho included Paulo Dybala and Chris Smalling, as well as changing the defensive scheme to a back four. He pushed two full-backs, namely Rick Karsdorp and Leonardo Spinazzola, to rise further ahead, so much so that Roma practically played with two defenders.

But it was Dybala’s voice that made a big impact. He scores immediately a minute after replacing Matias Vina and Roma play much more positive creating more chances.

“Obviously Dybala scored the first goal and the team had a different attitude. We showed the wrong attitude in the first half, we acted like they were 11 to 11,” Jose Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were too passive, while Paulo unlocked the situation and changed the whole attitude. Basically we switched to a two-back defense, knowing we had to score two goals quickly and maximize the player’s advantage,” he added, quoted by Football Italy.

This is Roma’s first Europa League win this season, considering they previously lost 1-2 to Ludogorets Razgrad in the first week. Later they will face Real Betis, but first they await two big challenges against Atalanta and Inter in Serie A.

Mourinho admits that there are still many tasks for Roma, one of which concerns the construction of the game from behind. Aside from that, there is also a question of final settlement which, according to him, can be much more effective and efficient.

“Roma did not play well in the first half, but this match is not really a tactical reference because we played with 10 men for 75 minutes. We need to improve our ability to build attacks from behind,” continued the Portuguese coach.

“Once again we fought with that and tried to make it invisible, but we have to roll the ball faster and the super talented players we have on offense need to be more determined to finish the chances.”
