London –
Jose Mourinho defend Harry Kane who branded a ‘shrewd’ player looking for a penalty. Manager Tottenham Hotspur carry Liverpool and Manchester United.
Kane was in the spotlight at the Tottenham vs Brighton & Hove Albion match last weekend. The England striker was accused of being deliberately violated to get a penalty.
The moment occurred when the game had only been running for 11 minutes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In front of the Brighton penalty box, Kane fell during an aerial duel with Adam Lallana.
In the spotlight, Kane looks deliberately violated in order to fall because he slightly turned his back on Lallana. As a result, Kane was labeled a ‘smart’ player for trying to get a foul.
Initially, Tottenham was only awarded a free kick. But after being checked by VAR, the host got a penalty, because Kane’s feet were apparently already in the line of the penalty box. Kane then executed a penalty, and brought Tottenham 1-0 advantage.
The match itself was finally won by Tottenham with a score of 2-1, after Tariq Lamptey had equalized the score to 1-1 but Gareth Bale replied. Tottenham themselves rose to third place in the Premier League standings thanks to this victory.
Ahead of the Europa League match against Ludogorets, Mourinho was again asked about Kane’s accusations of being a smart player. The former coach of Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United responded with harsh words.
“Harry Kane is in a position to control the ball and Lallana came in a reckless way. Why do you say it is smart? Smart is about winning the ball and scoring goals. But, it is a foul,” said Mourinho, reported by the Independent.
“I thought it was a direct free kick, but VAR said it was in the box because it was on the line. What are we talking about being clever? Harry Kane just wants to score goals.”
“Lallana who is reckless. Why are you talking about us? Talk about Liverpool, Manchester United, City, and others with players who are also ‘smart’ and get a penalty. Don’t talk about Harry Kane,” he explained.
Besides Kane, Mohamed Salah also originally accused of diving when Liverpool beat West Ham United last weekend. The Egyptian player was also considered too easy to fall in the penalty box, which helped the Reds win 2-1.
