The physique of an American mountaineer who disappeared 22 years in the past whereas climbing a snowy peak over 6,700 meters excessive in Peru has been discovered mummified and together with his clothes in good situation, native police reported Monday.
American William Stampfl, of Slovenian origin, had been reported lacking in June 2002 when an avalanche buried him on the 6,757-meter Huascarán mountain within the Ancash area, some 400 km north of Lima.
“After an intense search, they discovered the mummified and dehydrated physique on the Huascarán snow-capped mountain,” the best in Peru, the police stated on their social networks.
The invention was made potential by the deglaciation of the snow-capped mountains because of local weather change, a phenomenon affecting the Cordillera Blanca within the Peruvian Andes, which left the physique uncovered to the open air.
William Stampfl was carrying his climbing gear, harness and boots with crampons, all of which had been in good situation, in keeping with pictures launched by police.
Rescuers recognized him after discovering the American passport of William Stampfl, who was 59 years outdated on the time of the accident, amongst his garments.
