FC Wil starts the new season on Sunday. It is now clear when the opposite grandstand will be covered and the lighting system will be expanded. Simon Dudle More than a year has passed since the Wiler city parliament approved a loan of 2.25 million francs for the roofing of the opposite stand in the Bergholz football stadium in May 2021. But the standing room spectators in the Bergholz don’t have a roof over their heads yet. An objection had to be settled.
But now there is the green light for this stadium expansion. And before the start of the season tomorrow, Sunday, the question arises: when will the roof come? “The work is going according to plan,” says Susanne Wahrenberger from the city of Wil. According to the current planning status, construction is scheduled to start in early 2023. The work is expected to be completed in June 2023. Since the expansion is taking place sector by sector, the stadium does not need to be closed for a long time. FC Wil can play all of the upcoming season’s home games on the Bergholz artificial turf – in front of spectators. According to FC Wil Managing Director Benjamin Fust, the Swiss Football League gave the blessing.
No objection to the new lighting
The way has not only been paved for the stadium roof. The stadium lighting can also be renovated. The existing system is not bright enough to meet the league’s requirements – and disperses too much light into the neighborhood.
In January, the Wiler city parliament approved a loan of CHF 720,000 for more light. Although there are too many emissions in the neighborhood with the new system, the public approval went without objection, as the city announced on request. Even if the building permit is still missing, nothing should stand in the way of the project. Susanne Wahrenberger says:
“The planning and implementation is planned together with the roofing of the opposite stand.”
An additional LED system is planned. These lights will be attached to the 38-meter masts at a height of 25 meters and are designed to scatter less light. For Challenge League games only, the pre-existing lights will also be turned on. For all other games and training sessions, there are two levels of brightness on the new LED system.
