He is credited with several hit rock songs from the 1970s, including Mississippi Queen.
He died of cardiac arrest Wednesday in Palm Coast, Florida, where he had been hospitalized, his spokesperson Steve Karas said.
The musician had struggled with various health issues in recent years. In 2011, he had to have his right leg amputated due to complications from his diabetes.
Rockers such as Gene Simmons and Slash have shown their support for him. Paul Stanley of the band Kiss described him on Twitter as “a gentle man and a guitar hero”.
