Bloom started from the second starting line. After the first lap, the athlete representing the CST PostNL Bafang team was only a few seconds behind the leaders in the top 15. There was a small group with favorites – Enrique Avancini, Nino Schurter and Thomas Litcher. Next, Bloom lost a bit of his position, retiring to 25th place.
Schurter made the breakthrough in the last lap, but the Swiss did not gain a significant advantage. He was briefly overtaken by his home Avancini, but Litsch took over the reins in the last lap. In the last meters, the Swiss was overtaken by South African champion Alan Haterley, who won. Second place for Litscher and third for Frenchman Maxim Morotte.
Bloom finished 23rd in a fierce battle, losing 27 seconds.
On Sunday, the men’s elite riders will compete in the main competitions in the Olympic cross country.
