(CNN) The eruption of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily (3,350 meters above sea level) has forced the closure of Catania International Airport on the island. As a result, many flights have been delayed, canceled, and their destinations changed.
The airport was closed until 8 p.m. local time on Friday, after the eruption of nearby Mount Etna, and all flights were barred, the airport said in a statement. Passengers were urged to check with their airline before heading to the airport.
According to the Etna Volcano Observatory of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanoes, eruption activity began on the 13th, and a “lava fountain” spewed lava, and a volcanic plume spread to the south. Volcanic ash is deposited on the south side of the mountain.
