Motorola razr: his successor is already in the pipeline

In an interview with the podcast Reframed Tech, Lenovo’s South Africa chief executive, Thomas Dousson, said a Motorola razr successor is slated to arrive by September.

Strange statement that that which was made at the microphone of the podcast Reframed Tech this week. Thomas Dousson, general manager of Lenovo South Africa says that a Motorola razr 2 will be planned by the company. A successor to Motorola’s first foldable test, which is still fairly discreet in markets other than the American market.

Presented in November 2019, and finally released last February after being repelled several times, the Motorola razr was an opportunity for Motorola to be one of the first manufacturers to offer a foldable smartphone, alongside Samsung or Huawei. To do this, she knew how to appeal to nostalgia by offering a very current version of her emblematic clamshell mobile phone from the 2000s. If the form has its supporters, the execution has turned out to be fairly basic. Unlike its foldable competitors, there is no question of dealing with a high-tech data sheet since it is no more and no less than a mid-range smartphone. Its price, it is far from it since it costs almost € 1,600 to get hold of it. And this is also the real problem with this Motorola razr: its availability.

Our American colleagues were lucky to be able to get their hands on it to test it – and even buy it. In France, even if it is available on the official website or on that of Fnac, the press has not yet been able to test it. On sales, Motorola has not yet communicated, and it is doubtful that this will be the case one day. While it has delighted fans of the vertical format, Samsung has meanwhile arrived on the market with its Galaxy Z Flip, a foldable format smartphone clamshell and the more recent technical sheet.

What a surprise then to hear that a “second generation” is already planned, which is less than a year before the first is introduced to the world. If the firm finds a way to improve its model so that it is more competitive with the different players in the foldable world, we are interested. Thickness revised downwards, especially on the chin, a better processor, or a slightly more affordable price are improvements that seem to be possible. Also, always in order to be competitive, an improvement on the photo part would not be refused. With its return to the high-end segment thanks to its Edge +, Motorola shows that it has the know-how. All that remains is to offer it on a slightly more original smartphone – the razr 2, hopefully.
