Motorola recently announced new Edge 30 series smartphones: Moto Edge 30 Ultra, Edge 30 Neo and Edge Fusion. The company is investing heavily in cameras, looks and software. Furthermore, the competitive price, according to Motorola, should convince users to choose a Motorola device first. Motorola is mainly known in the Benelux as a manufacturer active mainly in the budget segment, for example with the Moto G series. After years, the company is again aiming at the high-end market with the Edge series. In addition, the company also released the foldable Moto Razr some time ago. The company recently launched a new model, but only in China. During the introduction, the manufacturer said between his nose and lips that this new version will arrive in Europe later. They didn’t want to release any more details about that device.

We were able to play with smartphones in Milan just before the release of the devices and we share our first impressions with you here.
Motorola Edge 30 Ultra
Motorola is focusing on photography with the more powerful and expensive version of the Edge 30. It is the first device released in the Netherlands to feature a 200 megapixel camera. The device is equipped with a Samsung Isocell HP1 sensor. It has an area of 82 square millimeters and is therefore larger than the sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The camera can shoot 8k videos and record 4k videos with HDR10 +. The module can combine sixteen pixels into a single pixel in the photo to create extra-large 2.56-micron pixels, which the company says can capture more light and take sharp, low-noise photos in low-light situations. The photos ultimately have a resolution of 12.5 megapixels. When more light is available, it can combine four pixels to create 50 megapixel photos. It is also possible not to combine the pixels and thus take 200 megapixel photos.
Also, the company hasn’t cut down on the other cameras found on the device. The second camera is an ultrawide model with 50 megapixels and autofocus, so it can also act as a macro camera. These specs are similar to the OnePlus 10 Pro, except that the angle of view is much smaller and more in line with other phones’ ultra wide-angle cameras. The telephoto lens is 12 megapixel with the ability to zoom up to 2x. While it’s nice that this device has a telephoto lens on board, it’s surprising that most of the flagship models have a model that offers more magnification. The front camera sits behind a hole in the screen and is a 60 megapixel unit.

We couldn’t resist taking some test photos with this device. In the limited time we had with this smartphone, we were able to capture something with the main camera during the day and in the evening. We also used the front camera to take some selfies. The first impression of the main camera is good. The photos look elegant and clear and indeed there seems to be hardly any noise. We expected a little more from the front camera. The photos look a bit boring.
We were particularly curious about the night photos and the device seems to work well too. Since the photos were taken during the presentation of the devices, there was enough (disco) light, so we still don’t know how the camera behaves when it’s really dark. The best thing you could really do was sneak into the darkest spot behind the stage and take a picture of the back of the speakers there. This photo also looks very good and we are curious to know how the device will behave in the usual dark places where we take our test photos. Unfortunately, the first impression of the selfie camera was a little underwhelming in low-light situations.
The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SOC, with 8 or 12 GB Lpddr5 memory and 128 to 512 GB UFS 3.1 memory. The battery has a capacity of 4610 mAh and can be charged with 125 W. Wireless charging is possible with up to 50 W. The device can wirelessly charge other devices up to 10 W. The charger is included. Motorola claims the device only takes seven minutes on the charger to last a full day.
The smartphone will be available in two colors, black and white. Both devices have a raw frosted glass back with shiny flecks. This makes the device feel and looks very luxurious. The frame is made of aluminum and the camera island does not protrude too much. The device is also equipped with stereo speakers.
On the front of the Edge 30 Ultra is a 6.67-inch OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and the ability to display 10-bit colors. This is equivalent to one billion colors. The resolution is 2400×1080 pixels. The screen is curved at the ends. Motorola calls this edge-to-edge display. Because the screen is so curved, it can also act as a notification LED when the device is placed on the table with the screen facing down. The edges of the screen remain visible and light up in different colors if something is wrong. The manufacturer claims that the screen has a maximum brightness of 1250 cd / m22. The screen is equipped with a layer of Gorilla Glass 5 and the device has an IP52 rating, which means it is splash proof. That’s less than we see in other high-end smartphones that usually have an IP68 rating. The Moto Edge 30 Ultra is available immediately and costs 900 euros.
