Motorola Launches New Generation Clamshell Razrs: Introducing the Flagship Razr 40 Ultra with Largest External Display

Today, at an event in Madrid, Motorola presents a new generation of clamshell Razrs. This year, for the first time, there are two models – one premium, the other slightly cheaper with a smaller external display. The sheer magnificence of the Spanish premiere shows that after several years of market research, Motorola is really serious about clamshells and that it has ambitions to shake the position of Samsung, the largest manufacturer of clamshells to date.

The main star of the evening is undoubtedly the flagship Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. It will also be sold in the Czech Republic for 29,000 crowns. You might be wondering about the odd name – until now, Motorola’s clamshell was simply called the Razr, with the year of release added to distinguish it. But this year, for the first time, there are exactly two models, so the manufacturer decided to systematically unify the name with its line of flagship smartphones of the usual Edge design. This year’s Razrs have the number “40” in their name, without the thirties or lower tens having existed before.

It keeps the phone open even in an intermediate position. In the closed state, there is no gap between the two flips

But that’s more of a cosmetic change. The main novelty of the Razr 40 Ultra is (by clamshell standards) a giant external display that covers almost the entire upper flip side. The display is so large that it even includes both lenses of the main camera and the adjacent LED flash.

The internal P-OLED display bends in half. The stock display is decent, the notch is visible, but not particularly striking

In this respect, it is the largest triple “shot” of the display that can be seen on a mobile so far. The external 120Hz display is an OLED type with an almost square resolution of 1056 × 1066 pixels and a diagonal of 3.6 inches. The internal flexible 165Hz panel is a P-OLED type with a diagonal of 6.9 inches and has a traditional wide-angle resolution of 1080 × 2640 pixels.

The external display can do many things, dozens of applications can be controlled from it. It also has its own Always on mode, in which you can choose from many different graphic themes

Already last year, Motorola abandoned the original “razrov” design of its clamshells with a characteristic protruding chin and took a similar path as Samsung with its Z Flips. The design is smooth, symmetrical, unobtrusive. Thanks to the large external display, the novelty has the upper hand not only against the aforementioned Samsung, but also, for example, the Oppo Find N2 Flip model, which also has a significantly larger secondary display, but even that does not cover the entire exterior. The joint of the phone is held in several positions from approximately 45 to 135 ° opening, which can be used, for example, for stabilization during photography or in various other applications.

The Razr 40 Ultra has a solid body made of metal and glass materials (in the blue and black variants), the “Viva Magenta” red color has a leatherette finish. At the same time, it meets the degree of partial water resistance IP52. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. The only memory variant 8 + 256 GB will be delivered.

In addition to the cable and adapter, the sales package also includes a two-part transparent plastic cover

The battery with a capacity of 3800 mAh can be recharged using a cable with a maximum power of 33 W, but also wirelessly (5 W). The main dual camera, which forms a double opening of the external display, will offer a resolution of 12 + 13 Mpx and a set of primary (f1.5 OIS) and wide-angle (f2.2) lenses.

Lightweight model with a smaller display

In addition to the flagship Razr, the manufacturer in Madrid also presented its lightweight variant, the Motorola Razr 40. It is virtually the same device in terms of size, and the internal flexible display is also identical. The difference can be found on the outside – this time the OLED panel is in the form of a thin strip with a diagonal of 1.47 inches, which only displays the time and basic notifications. This may also make this Razr cheaper.

The camera is also different, offering sensors with a resolution of 64 and 13 Mpx. The battery has a capacity of 4200 mAh and the performance is provided by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor. It will be available in green, cream and purple colors. Availability for the Czech market for this model has not yet been announced, the price should be around 22 thousand crowns.
