It may seem that Samsung reigns in solitary majesty on the folding throne. With the latest versions of Z fold And Flip to Z the company has taken the concept of foldable smartphones to a new level. But there are challengers, and one of them is Motorola, which is now unveiling the 2022 version of its Razr phone.
This year’s new Razr updates both the design and several key specs under the hood. Folded, the phone gives a less bulky impression its predecessor, while the form factor is considerably more square. As early as two years ago, we could say that the Razr had the “most beautiful fold” and left no visible space between the parts that the Z Fold and Flip were a little ashamed of at the time, so we’re confident on that point.
When the Razr is opened, the user is greeted by a 6.7-inch screen, now with a 144Hz refresh rate. The predecessor’s primary screen was 6.2-inch and 60Hz, which almost felt like difficult already in 2020. A rather big update on the front of the screen, then.
Even bigger is the upgrade to the camera rig. Now Motorola is increasing the number of sensors on the back so that it is possible to shoot ultra-wide with a new 30 megapixel camera. The main camera is 50 megapixels and should have significantly improved properties for dark photography. On the video front it is possible to record up to 8k 30 fps.
In terms of performance, obviously a lot happens in two years. The Razr is now equipped with a lightning-fast Snapdragon 8 Plus gen 1 chip and a larger 3,500mAh battery. This charges twice as fast as its predecessor thanks to its 30W Turbopower technology. The phone is IP52 rated, which means good protection from dirt and dust as well as water droplets. Don’t get it wet!
8 gigabytes of memory and 256 gigabytes of storage are unchanged from the 2020 version, but the former is now faster lpddr5. The new Motorola Razr can be pre-ordered from today and will be released on November 11th. The price comes in at 11,490 SEK, which corresponds to the biggest competitor Samsung. It also shows how “cheap” foldable mobile phones have become as the 2020 Razr costs 16,000 SEK.
