The Bullitt Group is engaged in the production of durable smartphones, and their latest big move is to put devices on the table that are capable of two-way satellite communication, without any giant antennas and other extra hardware. One of the new products is the Cat S75, and the other is the Motorola Defy 2, which, in addition to satellite communication, offers 5G connectivity, a resistant outer casing and decent, mid-range hardware.
The outer cover of the smartphone with an antibacterial coating is designed to survive drops from a height of up to 1.8 meters onto a steel plate, extreme temperature conditions -30 and 75 degrees Celsius – high humidity and even salt fog. The design of the phone also allows us to wash it with soap or disinfectant. Motorola’s device received IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H ratings.
The Motorola Defy 2 is equipped with a 6.6-inch screen protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The resolution of the panel is Full HD+, the aspect ratio is 20:9, and the refresh rate is 120 Hz. The display can also be used with gloves and wet fingers. The drop-shaped sensor island houses an 8-megapixel image recording unit, and a fingerprint reader is located on the back.
The phone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 930 chipset, which is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage during assembly, which can be expanded at any time via a micro SD card. The phone runs Android 12 at launch, but it will be updated to 13 and later to 14 as promised. The smartphone will receive quarterly security patches for the first three years, and then the satellite communication system will be kept fresh for another two years.
On the back of the Motorola Defy 2, there is an f/1.8 aperture, 50-megapixel primary image capture unit, which is complemented by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. Inside the durable mobile, we would find a battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh if we hit it with a screwdriver, the battery is compatible with 15-watt wired charging, but can also be powered by induction solutions.
The satellite communication provided by the smartphone is two-way, you can send a text message anywhere where the view is clear, even without a telephone network. Messages can be up to 140 bytes long, but they are Unicode compatible, meaning they can cover all writing systems. The sender can also attach their current location to the text. The receiving party can read the messages without any special equipment or software, but they need to download an app if they want to reply. Fortunately, the application is completely free and available for both Android and iOS operating systems.
Motorola Defy will go on sale in the second quarter, first on the American continent, where it will be sold at a price of $599 (~ HUF 214,000). There has been no mention of a European release yet, but it is not impossible that the mobile will reach us in the future.
