motorists fear the sting

Rising fuel and raw material prices, very high insurance premiums, skyrocketing car repair costs: the forecasts for 2023 are not at all optimistic, and Italian motorists are starting to fear a year of uncontrolled spending. The pockets of families are empty, the situation is very complex for the Bel Paese.

Car and motorcycle owners in Italy will have to face a sting in 2023, or at least, at the moment the forecasts are these. Today is the Federcarrozzieri to raise the alarm, following the communications of consumer organizations for next year, which predict stings on the cost of petrol and motor liability.

What will happen in 2023

Federcarrozzieri explains: “During 2022, the prices of bodywork consumables exploded as a combined effect of high energy prices and the constant rise in the price of spare parts, an item that accounts for around 70% of the average cost of repairs. The operators in the sector have only partially succeeded in absorbing the higher costs to be borne by them, with the consequence that in the current year the price lists relating to repairs to the public have undergone inevitable increases. Further increases are expected for 2023, with the costs of the interventions destined to rise on average by +15% compared to the beginning of 2022″.

According to the Italian Federation of Independent Coachbuilders the crisis of raw materials and components has further increased the difficulty of procuring materials and spare parts, waiting times have thus increased dramatically (+20% compared to 2021), with great damage for all motorists.

The president Davide Galli underlines: “Faced with this situation, an increasing number of consumers are turning to for repairs a improvised body builders without any authorization, who to marginalize costs resort to lower quality spare parts, often carrying out work in an approximate way so as to reduce times, with consequences both on the quality of the service and on road safety”.

Federcarrozzieri gave its contribution to the creation of new vehicle repair guidelineswhich give consumers a very important tool to understand and evaluate the quality of the repair with an eye to the materials used and the processing methods.

Other prices at risk

Unfortunately too auto insurance rates are at risk of exaggerated increasesi, after the constant reduction of recent years. This time it is Absolute users to speak, and explains: “Today the average motor liability premium, net of taxes, is around 310 euros. The country’s economic situation, characterized by the energy scare and heavy inflation, will also have repercussions on insurance policies, which risk rising by 6% in 2023. If we consider that there are 43 million insured vehicles on the road in Italy, of which 32 .5 million cars, the sting on insurance premiums only for the category of motorists would reach the maxi figure of 605 million euros in the new year”.

The president Furio Truzzi underlines: “From next 1 January around 2 million policyholders risk seeing each other quadruple the prizes of motor liability policies by virtue of the entry into force of the rule, introduced by the Competition Law, which obliges foreign companies operating in Italy to adopt the direct compensation procedure. A novelty that could cost the community of policyholders another 400 million euros”.

Fear also for expensive petrol, unfortunately as we know the Government has adjusted the cut of excise duties, and today the discounts provided are almost halved. Regardless of the development of prices at the pump, according to forecasts, a full tank of petrol will cost next year 6.1 euros moreand every motorist will suffer an increase of 146 euros per year for refueling, according to what was declared by Codacons. Great fear therefore for Italian motorists.
