Hungarian motorists are preparing for the winter by changing their tires and refilling the winter windscreen washer, but almost half of the respondents, about 46 per cent, winterize in occasional cases, according to a representative MOL survey.

Although most Hungarian motorists consciously prepare their cars for the winter, there are still those who winterize occasionally and only deal with what to do when the first cold ones arrive. However, half of those surveyed will be preparing their vehicle for the colder seasons by the end of October.

Replacing tires, winter windshield washers, ice scrapers and other winter aids in the car – for most Hungarian motorists, these mean preparing their car for the winter. According to MOL’s research, almost a third of motorists spend 30-60 minutes preparing their cars for winter, 20 percent less, and half more than an hour. At the same time, it is important that 96 percent of Hungarian motorists prepare their vehicles for the winter. A quarter of homeowners also have a snow chain in their car, almost everyone has an ice scraper, and three-quarters of motorists have a snow blower and liquid de-icer in their car.
The research also found that 79 percent of those who use their car regularly sit in the car as much in the winter as in other seasons. 40 percent of them check their fluid levels more often at this time, and 94 percent fill a winter window washer in the tank. In addition to the basic accessories, a dehumidifier and a blanket are also common winter accessories, and less often the starter cord, snow chain, or replacement bulb are included in the winter kit. Fifteen percent of motorists also pack food and drink in the car in the event they stay on the road due to the weather.
Four out of ten cars travel in vehicles older than 15 years. In the case of older cars, winter preparation is even more important for operational safety, not to mention that our cars will remain in a condition that we can use them for a long time thanks to careful winter care.
– said András Orosz, Retail Manager of MOL Hungary, in connection with the research data.
In cold weather, you need to pay even more attention to starting with a full tank, even for shorter distances – it is often better to refuel so that the car is heated if you get stuck on the road. Checking the condition of the battery is also a key issue because they consume themselves on the coldest days. It is important to drain the condensate regularly from the fuel system, to maintain fuel filters that have a significant effect on operational safety, or to clean the fuel system in older cars. In the cold of diesel cars, it is strongly recommended to refuel with premium fuel to make sure the car starts in all conditions. Because of this, every third car uses premium fuel more often in the winter, he says.
