The driver of the car that was involved in an accident in Bavel on Sunday morning in which two cyclists fell has reported to the police. It concerns a man of 20 years from Bavel. It is not yet clear whether he deliberately cut off the group of cyclists, according to the police. It is also not conclusively established that he noticed something of the fall. He is seen as a suspect.
“We will soon invite him to the office for an interview,” said a spokesperson. “Now we only spoke to him by phone.” Before the police speak to the suspect, she first wants to talk to other witnesses and view camera images.
On Sunday, the police already indicated that the group of cyclists did not ride on the mandatory bicycle path, but on the roadway. That might have irritated the driver. “The driver honked as he overtook the cyclists. Once past the group of racing cyclists, the motorist suddenly turned to the right.” Whether he hit the cyclists is not yet clear on Monday morning.
Collarbone fracture
One of the cyclists was taken to hospital by ambulance. It concerns a 72-year-old man from Belgium. He suffered a collarbone fracture and abrasions. The other victim suffered minor injuries.
The police are investigating whether there was intent. It is not yet clear whether the man noticed anything about the fall. If that is the case, then there is in any case a case of continued driving after an accident.
